Schneeganserhof - Die Natur am Chiemsee erleben

NATURE EXPERIENCES

Right on your doorstep lies the Achen Delta—a unique inland delta and a nature reserve of major significance in Central Europe, spanning 1,250 hectares and holding international importance. Guided tours of the delta can be booked for those interested.

The delta formed by the Tiroler Ache river as it flows into Lake Chiemsee, along with the adjacent riparian forests, forms part of one of Bavaria’s most ornithologically significant nature reserves.

Covering an area of approximately 8,500 hectares, Lake Chiemsee is Bavaria’s largest lake. Together with the surrounding wetlands and nearby mountains, it ranks among the most biodiverse regions for birdlife within the Free State. Since 1950, around 300 different bird species have been recorded in this area. Approximately 40% of the lakeshore remains in a near-natural state.

In winter, up to 40,000 birds are recorded within the Lake Chiemsee Ramsar site. An observation tower located in Hirschau Bay offers the best vantage point for spotting a wide variety of bird species. Information panels highlight rare birds and plants, as well as the geological history behind the formation of this nature reserve. A visit during the winter months is particularly rewarding, as Lake Chiemsee provides vital wintering grounds for numerous Nordic bird species.
